Our Montessori Approach to Dementia Care
Putting emphasis on our care recipients’ strengths, giving them choices, and creating purpose and meaning, the Montessori approach can be empowering and life-transforming for dementia care recipients and caregivers alike.
Using the Montessori guiding principles, we deliver quality dementia care to the elderly in Singapore by
focusing on the strengths of persons with dementia |
providing them carefully-planned activities that offer choices and are purposeful |
creating templates for daily activities and tasks, and breaking down these tasks into easy-to-follow steps |
building the confidence of our care recipients by empowering them to complete simple tasks then preparing and challenging them to perform more complex procedures |
evaluating the activities of our participants by measuring their level of engagement in our activities |
cultivating a team of caring staff empowered to communicate and engage with persons with dementia |
educating and enabling family caregivers and foreign domestic helpers in dementia care using the Montessori Approach |
training healthcare and eldercare workers to engage people with dementia through purposeful activities |
Montessori Methods Adapted for Local Context
Adapted and modified for the local context, the Montessori Approach has been developed based on the researched and evidence-based Montessori-based Dementia Programming® (MBDP®) founded by Dr Cameron Camp. A proven method of working with older adults living with cognitive and/or physical impairments, MBDP® is based on the ideas of renown educator Maria Montessori. The method is widely used throughout USA, Europe and Australia.
